Do Teens Need Therapy?

It’s normal for teenagers to experience ups and downs. But if your teen seems constantly stressed, withdrawn, or overwhelmed, they may be carrying more than they can handle on their own. Therapy is not a sign of weakness. It’s an opportunity for growth, healing, and self-discovery.

In therapy, teens learn that their feelings are valid and that they don’t have to go through difficult experiences alone.

FAQs

What ages do you work with in your teen therapy program?

We work with adolescents from age 12 through 17 and offer a seamless transition to adult therapy as clients move into their late teens and early adulthood. We also have extensive experience working with young adults in college and graduate school navigating the transition out of adolescence.

How involved are parents in teen therapy?

Parent involvement depends on the age of the teen and the nature of the concerns being addressed. For younger teens we typically maintain more regular parent communication. For older teens we prioritize confidentiality and the therapeutic relationship while still keeping families informed when safety requires it. We discuss the specific approach to parent involvement during the initial consultation so everyone is on the same page from the start.

My teenager is refusing therapy. What should I do?

Resistance to therapy is extremely common in adolescents and does not mean therapy cannot be helpful. Sometimes the most effective first step is a parent consultation where we help you understand what is driving the resistance and how to talk about therapy in a way that reduces rather than increases defensiveness. We are also happy to offer a single low-stakes consultation with your teenager that is framed as a chance to meet someone, not a commitment to anything.

Do you specialize in teen eating disorders specifically?

Yes. Eating disorders in adolescents are a significant area of specialization at Thrope Therapy. Each of our therapists works specifically with teens navigating eating disorders, body image, anxiety, and related concerns. Early intervention in teen eating disorders significantly improves long-term outcomes and we take referrals from parents, pediatricians, and school counselors.

What issues do teen therapists at Thrope Therapy commonly work with?

We work with teens navigating eating disorders and disordered eating, body image and self-esteem, anxiety and social anxiety, depression, identity and LGBTQIA+ concerns, academic pressure, family conflict, trauma, and the stress of transitions including high school, college applications, and social dynamics. We bring warmth, directness, and genuine engagement to working with young people rather than a clinical distance.

Is virtual therapy available for teen clients?

Yes. We offer virtual therapy for teen clients across New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Virtual sessions are often more accessible for teenagers who have school and extracurricular schedules that make in-person sessions difficult, and many teens find the comfort of their own environment helpful for opening up.
