Shine Brighter, Live Authentically

Being part of the LGBTQIA+ community comes with strength, resilience, and pride, but it can also bring unique challenges. You may feel the weight of family rejection, workplace discrimination, or the exhaustion of constantly having to explain or defend who you are. Even in a city as diverse as New York, it’s not uncommon to feel misunderstood, isolated, or unsafe in certain spaces.

At Thrope Therapy, we offer LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy in NYC that provides a safe, supportive environment where you don’t have to hide, edit, or minimize who you are. Here, your identity is not only respected, it’s celebrated.

Why LGBTQIA+ Therapy Matters

Studies show that LGBTQIA+ individuals experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, and trauma, not because of who they are, but because of the discrimination, stigma, and pressures they face. Therapy can provide a space to:

  • Process experiences of rejection, shame, or internalized homophobia/transphobia

  • Explore your gender identity or sexual orientation without judgment

  • Navigate the coming-out process or transition with support

  • Build resilience against stress, microaggressions, and discrimination

  • Strengthen relationships, whether romantic, platonic, or family-based

  • Heal from trauma and create healthier coping strategies

You don’t need to carry these challenges alone. An affirming therapist can walk beside you as you work through the pain, confusion, and isolation, and move toward a life that feels freer, fuller, and more aligned with who you are.

The LGBTQIA+ Community Is Ready For You

Through therapy, members of the LGBTQIA+ community can find healing, celebrate their unique identities, and become advocates for change in the world around them. Whether you are a newly introduced member of the community or you are trying to better support a queer-identifying individual in your life, you deserve the time and space to explore what these changes mean to you. If you are ready to take the next step in embracing your identity, our team can provide you with more information on how to get started.

FAQs

What does LGBTQ+ affirming therapy mean at Thrope Therapy?

LGBTQ+ affirming therapy means your identity is never treated as a problem, a phase, or something to be understood before we get to the real work. Every clinician at Thrope Therapy practices from an affirming framework, which means your sexual orientation, gender identity, and relationship structures are respected and centered in how we work together.

Do you have LGBTQ+ identifying therapists on your team?

Yes. Our team includes LGBTQ+ identifying clinicians and all of our therapists have specific training in LGBTQ+ affirming practice. We can match you with a clinician whose background and experience feels like the right fit.

Can you help with issues specific to the LGBTQ+ community?

Yes. We have experience working with identity exploration and coming out at any age, minority stress and the cumulative trauma impact of navigating a world that is not always safe, family estrangement and chosen family, gender dysphoria and gender affirming care, relationship structures including non-monogamy, eating disorders and body image in LGBTQ+ populations where rates are significantly higher than in the general population, and the intersection of queer identity with anxiety, depression, and trauma.

I am questioning my identity and not sure what I am looking for in therapy. Is that okay?

Completely. You do not need to have language for your identity or a clear sense of what you are working on before starting therapy. Many clients come to us in a period of uncertainty and the therapeutic relationship becomes a space to explore rather than a place where answers are expected. Curiosity is enough to start.

Is your practice inclusive of trans and nonbinary clients?

Yes. We work with trans and nonbinary clients across all areas of our practice. We ask about your preferred names and pronouns from the first session and our approach to care is fully gender affirming. We also have referral relationships with gender affirming medical providers in New York City for clients who are pursuing or considering gender affirming care.
