FAQs

How do I know if I have binge eating disorder or if I just overeat sometimes?

Binge eating disorder involves recurrent episodes of eating large amounts of food in a short period of time accompanied by a sense of loss of control, followed by significant distress including guilt, shame, or disgust. It is the most common eating disorder in the United States and it is different from occasionally overeating at a holiday meal or a social event. If you regularly find yourself eating past fullness with a feeling of being unable to stop, feeling distressed or ashamed afterward, and hiding the behavior from others, that pattern deserves clinical attention.


Is binge eating disorder caused by a lack of willpower? A: No. Binge eating disorder is a nervous system response, not a character flaw. The restriction and chaos cycle that underlies most binge eating is driven by biological, psychological, and emotional factors that have nothing to do with willpower or self-control. In fact, trying harder to restrict is usually what makes binge eating worse rather than better. Treatment works by addressing what the bingeing is doing for you emotionally, not by increasing your effort to stop.


What treatment approach does Thrope Therapy use for binge eating disorder?

We take a weight-inclusive, non-diet approach to binge eating treatment. Rather than adding more food rules or restriction, we focus on understanding the emotional triggers and nervous system patterns that drive binge episodes, developing alternative coping strategies, and rebuilding a more compassionate relationship with food and your body. We draw from CBT, DBT, ACT and intuitive eating frameworks depending on what each client needs.


Will you put me on a diet or food plan as part of treatment?

No. Research consistently shows that restriction is one of the primary drivers of binge eating. We do not use diet plans, calorie counting, or food rules as part of treatment. We may work collaboratively with a dietitian who takes a weight-inclusive approach if that would be beneficial, but the goal is always more freedom with food, not less.


I have been binge eating in secret for years. Is it too late to get help? A: It is not too late. Binge eating disorder responds well to treatment regardless of how long it has been present. Most people carry this in silence for years before reaching out and the shame of that secrecy is part of what keeps the cycle going. Reaching out is the hardest step and it is also the most important one.
