From Isolation to Community: The Power of Recovery Supper Club
From Isolation to Community: The Power of Recovery Supper Club
Written by Lily Thrope
Recovery Supper Club is a monthly gathering for adults in stable recovery from eating disorders and chronic dieting. We understand that recovery can be a long and often isolating journey. While most treatment programs conclude around the time of weight restoration, the true emotional and psychological work often begins afterward. Navigating a world steeped in diet culture and disordered eating can be challenging, but you don’t have to do it alone. This space is designed to support you, providing connection, community, and a judgment-free environment where you can stay true to your recovery values.
The Story Behind Recovery Supper Club
Recovery Supper Club was born out of a real need for safe, supportive dining experiences. One of my clients expressed frustration with family and friends constantly making negative comments about food and body image while she was coming out of treatment. She felt isolated and struggled to find a safe place to enjoy meals without triggering conversations.
One of the hardest parts of leaving treatment is losing the built-in support system of people who share the same recovery goals. Recovery Supper Club was created to bridge that gap—bringing together individuals who have been through treatment or are actively working on their recovery. This group provides a much-needed in-person space for support, connection, and shared experiences.
Have you struggled with chronic dieting, eating disorders, or body image issues? If so, you’re not alone! Recovery Supper Club was created as a welcoming space for those looking to heal their relationship with food and body image while building genuine connections with others.
Here’s how you’ll know if this community is right for you:
You’ve experienced struggles with:
Chronic dieting: Feeling stuck in cycles of restriction, counting calories, or jumping from one diet to another.
Eating disorders: Recovering from anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, ARFID, or disordered eating habits.
Body image issues: Struggling with self-acceptance, body dysmorphia, or societal pressures to look a certain way.
You’re seeking a space to practice:
Intuitive eating, mindful eating, and an anti-diet approach to food.
You want to connect with people who:
Don’t focus on changing their bodies and aren’t interested in discussing dieting or food restriction.
Are ready to build friendships rooted in deeper, more meaningful topics.
Provide a safer social environment, particularly for those with social anxiety.
You’re looking for a space that offers:
Judgment-free conversation with no commentary on food choices.
Opportunities to try new restaurants in a supportive group setting.
A smaller, cozy environment that makes socializing and making new friends easier.
A welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that embraces body diversity and comfort for all body sizes.
A sense of community, especially if you’re new to NYC and looking to make genuine connections.
What Can You Expect at Recovery Supper Club?
Each gathering is designed to be a positive, enjoyable, and safe space for those in recovery. Here’s what you can look forward to:
