Unlocking Neuroplasticity: The Brain’s Amazing Ability to Reshape Itself
Written by Lily Thrope
Neuroplasticity is the brain’s incredible way of changing and reorganizing itself through life. Traditionally, scientists believed that the brain was "fixed" after a certain age, but modern research has shown that the brain is changeable and adaptable, even as we age. Our brains will form new neural networks each day, but there are certain things you can do to stimulate growth. Here are a few exercises to improve and increase neuroplasticity:
Learn a new language.
While not necessarily an easy feat, learning a new language is a great way of improving cognitive function and reshaping the brain. If you are looking for tools to learn languages, you can download the free app Duolingo, or use YouTube to listen to free language-learning videos. If learning a new language is too big of a challenge, try adding one new word to your vocabulary each day.
Movement.
While many of us are aware how beneficial physical movement can be to our physical health, did you know that it can also increase neuroplasticity? Exercise, specifically aerobic exercise, provides an increase of oxygen flow to the brain. Just 30 minutes of moderate exercise like walking, swimming, or yoga can significantly enhance brain plasticity.
Be creative.
Being creative is a fantastic way of improving neuroplasticity. This can include making art – like painting or drawing – making music, writing, and more. Engaging in creative activities may challenge your brain to think differently, promoting cognitive flexibility and innovative thinking.
Get enough sleep.
Quality sleep is crucial for neuroplasticity. During non-REM sleep, your brain consolidates memories and reorganizes neural networks. Aim for 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep to maximize this critical restoration process.
Exercise your non-dominant hand.
This might sound silly, but try doing a few exercises with your non-dominant hand, like brushing your teeth or eating. This seemingly simple activity forces your brain to develop alternative communication routes between neurons.
Meditate.
Meditation and other mindfulness exercises have been proven to increase gray matter–an essential part of the neural network. Gray matter is important because it helps execute memory, emotions and overall processing. There are many different types of meditation practices, from self-body scanning to walking and guided meditation. You can follow your own meditation, or watch a guided meditation video. All these tools help you work with your mind and build neuroplasticity.
Your brain is not a fixed entity but a dynamic, adaptable system. By intentionally engaging in activities that challenge and stimulate it, you can unlock incredible potential for personal growth, learning, and mental well-being. At Thrope Therapy we offer both in-person and virtual sessions to help you explore and enhance your brain's remarkable capabilities.
